Individualism is an out of touch PR term

It usually goes like this:

X&Y brand is bringing you the latest [insert contest or promotion here] for you to express your individualism and creativity.

I’ve been forced to write this false sense of a term in a press release before, even after I persistently fought against using it, especially because of the demographic.

First introduced by political economist Adam Smith, he argued the economy should be based on greed without much regard “to any overarching scheme of goodness or justice.

Example of why Adam Smith was wrong

Rushkoff, on the Media Squat, even went so far as to say that Game Theory, and, in particular, the Prisoner’s Dilemma, is a misnomer and has been proven wrong. Human beings, he argues, are set apart by rational thought.

The digital age and its influence on business just goes to show that collaboration trumps this false sense of competition (and scarcity).

Nothing of me is original. I am the combined effort of everybody I’ve ever known. – Chuck Palahniuk

Data + Art = Epic

I’m starting to get more into infographics (“information graphics”) for a couple of reasons:

  • I love data.  I’m a researcher at heart for truth and consequences.
  • I love beauty.  Aesthetics matter.

Put those two together and something epic comes out.  There are two blogs I’ve discovered that put these together.

I’ve actually blogged something about this before using TweetStats.  Be prepared for more.

You’ll find “Wired Magazine” atop my toilet

Wired Magazine
Which other magazine can you have that’s written by people just a tad bit smarter than the average population?

I’ve thankfully been able to travel across the pond at least once in my life.  It was probably the best trip of my life.  Here’s where I went:

  • London, England – Beautiful.  Lots of culture and funny people.  Almost got beat up by an old dude who thought I was in the American army.
  • Paris, France – I didn’t like it at first (because of the language barrier), but it grew on me.  After learning some French in college, I have an inkling to go back!  Dude in front of the Cathedrale de Notre Dame got mad at me because I was from Texas and I “had too much oil.”
  • Madrid, España – I actually didn’t care for it much.  Maybe another trip?
  • Sevilla, España (where I spent most of my time, see where I lived below) – My residencia!  So much history and beautiful architecture and people!

  • Lisboa, Portugal – Where they loved to speak English to me (since they do not like anything to do with the Spanish language).
  • Barcelona, España – A different part of Spain, but nevertheless cool.  Really chic.  One word:  Gaudí.

But, that was 3 years ago.

Help me decide on where I want to go next!  I’m thinking South America (more specifically, Colombia and Venezuela).
